“Ways” – Cayden Corbett

We had the pleasure of interviewing Cayden Corbett, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: I thought the production was smooth! What was the production process for this song?

CORBETT: As much as I love this track there were a lot of rewrites to this track. The main synth gives off this “outer space” vibe and I kept going with it and just wrote everything else around that! I had my older brother and a few friends listen to the first initial demos I made (which weren’t quite different than the final), and the feedback they gave inspired me to fix and rearrange minor details but enhanced the track beyond expectations.

Q: What does “Ways” mean to you?

CORBETT: “Ways” is all about ending your string of relationships you have with others for one person and begging for them to do the same for you. I wanted to write something relatable and something that made listeners feel wanted and desired by the one and only person who indirectly has control over their emotions and feelings. In other words, the song is pleading for you to leave your lover and be with me, because you changed the way I feel about how I look at the world.

Q: What would you say was your favorite aspect of the creative process?

CORBETT: One of my favorite aspects is the excitement of making something new. Meticulously crafting something through my lenses. I’ve been in the same room with professional musicians and writers and watched them work but personally, I love my own creative process because I feel like I have control. Whatever I sing, play, or write; I’m not doing it for anyone else but myself. After I give my track time to grow and construct, then I will find ways and meanings that listeners can be in my shoes and see my perspective of why I love the track I made so much.

Q: What got you interested in making music?

CORBETT: Ever since I was little I dreamed of being on stage in front of a crowd who appreciated what I had to say. I’ve always yearned for my voice to be heard, but I think my true inspiration is my older brother because he’s the one who got me into singing. I’ve been singing all throughout my life, But the one hot summer day he asked me to film a cover of a song with him affected my love for performing and writing for the rest of my life.

Q: How long have you been making music professionally and how would you say your sound has evolved, so far?

CORBETT: I released my first song summer of 2019. It wasn’t good. Wasn’t even mixed or mastered. Four years later, I’ve released and co-written a total of 45+ songs and I can say that with every new track, I’ve become so proud of the writer I’ve become. Although I know there are still a lot of things for me to learn, I’ve definitely evolved my sound throughout the years and I’m making more room to grow!

Q: What’s one pet peeve you have that people find strange?

CORBETT: I think I’m comfortable saying that I’m a perfectionist, I love when things are organized and done with effort. So, regrettably saying that one of my biggest pet peeves is laziness! I don’t like it when tasks are met with little expectations and it drives me nuts! I was always taught that if I do something, I need to put 100% effort into it! But everyone always tells me that I “try too hard” or that I need to “relax, it’s not that serious”. I see where they’re coming from, but I would have to respectfully disagree because I have a different work ethic.
