“Letters to You” – Asmé

It took a bit longer than usual for me to get through “Letters to You” by Asmé. Not because it’s a bad song. Oh no, quite the opposite. It’s one of those songs that stops you dead in your tracks, especially if you’ve found yourself dealing with depression and/or anxiety at some point in your existence. With any luck, this powerful piece of music will aid others as much as it did me on this random winter day.

“Letters to You” is Asmé’s way of putting that internal struggle we have into a song. Once you realize the person on the other end of this conversation is Asmé herself, you can almost immediately put yourself in that same position. On top of the personal lyrical content that lends itself to be more universal than not, musically the song blends the soul of R&B with the lyricism of something you’d be more likely to hear in a pop-rock/emo song. As a fan of all of the above genres, this marriage of styles pleased me more than I thought it ever could. If “Letters to You” is what Asmé can do with a debut – I cannot wait to hear what’s next.

The thing setting Asmé’s music apart from so many other songs tackling these topics is that the merchandise surrounding the single’s release offers help in the form of mental health kits. These kits include playlists, activities to help cope, and more. Asmé also plans to place personalized letters across her city with the hopes that they can also help those struggling with their mental health – and during a time where so many are drained – it’s a wonderful gesture.
