“LBD” – Alex Slay

We had the pleasure of interviewing Alex Slay, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: How long have you been making music?

SLAY: I’ve been playing music since I was 15 and started making and recording music when I was about 21 so just about 6 years.

Q: In what way(s) would you say your sound has evolved along the way?

SLAY: My sound has changed in many ways. One being my influences, I started off listening to old soul records like Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass, Donny Hathaway, etc. Now I listen to a mix of modern artists like Lucky Daye, Anderson Paak, and Arin Ray, these are some of the artists that I think are really pushing the envelope of R&B and pioneering a new sound with a mix of old soul. Another way would be the way I create and record music. I started just by playing piano and having musicians build around it, but now I’m able to produce in my own room and have a pretty solid demo to start with.

Q: What inspired “LBD”?

SLAY: “LBD” was inspired sort of by accident. I was going through a major writer’s block. I was on FaceTime with my girlfriend, and she seemed distracted. I asked what she was doing and she said she was looking at LBDs. I asked her what that was and she said: “It means little black dress”. I then told her I would be right back, hung up, and created the demo that is now LBD about 30 minutes after.

Q: Haha! That’s interesting! Which instruments do you play and what’s your favorite? Why?

SLAY: I only play keys, it’s definitely my favorite cause I’m equally able to build my whole track with it, drums, keys, bass, etc.

Q: Which is your least favorite to play? Why?

SLAY: I tried playing guitar, but it didn’t really click for me.

Q: How has your 2023 been so far and what’s one thing you’re really looking forward to doing this year? Good luck with the release!

SLAY: 2023 has been good to me so far, been really busy, with shows and traveling. I’m looking forward to dropping more music as well as playing a new and improved show that I am currently creating with my MD “Music Director”.
