“Bloom” by Maritza Merk

Now is the time to check out Maritza Merk’s stellar track “Bloom!”

“Bloom” is one of those smooth alternative pop tracks that offers a crisp blend of genres. With R&B melodies, a funky groove, and a catchy chorus, it drives listeners into a captivating atmosphere. It immediately starts with a captivating washed-out sound that slowly rises into clarity with atmospheric synths and vocals. Then, as the body of the track cuts in, the production follows a bass lead with soft rhythmic percussion. This track benefits from a full alto vocal sound and crisp production, and its flow sets up a feeling of introspective beauty.

“Bloom” starts with the lines, “Felt like hell today / Moving slow I feel / We might need a break.” This track lyrically plays into the introspective feeling of the music. It seems to capture the tale of a rocky part of a relationship that may be ending. It comes from a narrator’s voice pushing another person away, but they want that person to stay regardless. That being said, they accept that things might reach an end. However, there is a note of hope with a repetitive hook: “Mama says I’m gon’ be okay, and I believe her.” Overall, it seems to come from the voice of someone who is struggling with their mental health, and those struggles are starting to bleed into their relationship.

Maritza Merk is a Brooklyn-born and New Jersey-raised lo-fi R&B artist with a Haitian background. Merk started making music young, performing at local talent shows and a friend’s families. She’s already performed in large venues across the U.S.,  and “Bloom” marks a stellar release. Though this track came out in 2022, hopefully she has some new projects on the way soon!
