TEHYA just released her new single “Love Overdose” on June 25, and it’s a melodic, poignant delve into falling in love and losing friendship.
“Love Overdose” immediately establishes itself well with a full string quartet, filling up the space with an array of tones with wonderful harmony. Slowly, the intro ushers in the vocals, which have really great clarity due to how they’re produced and are delivered with great fullness. That being said, it wavers into softer moments that land emotionally, and they evolve over time into belts. The chorus has a bit of an anthemic nature, and it overall feels like a slow burn that delivers the lyrics well. Also, at around 02:24, there’s a really great bridge that gives electronic sounds a bit more of a focus as it rises to a really strong climax before fading back. TEHYA really put a lot of soul into this, and that’s shown through every little aspect of how the music is put together and how it’s produced.
When it comes to lyrics, this track is about falling in love with a friend but pulling back in an attempt not to ruin what’s already there. TEHYA says that love overdose “was created after a close friend of mine had developed feelings for me, unfortunately leading to the end of our friendship. After we stopped talking, I found myself writing this song from their perspective.” In general, “Love Overdose” does really well at sharing what it’s like going through the motions of falling in love with a friend, knowing that it might lead to an inevitable end. It’s about wanting to be closer, and instead getting further away.
“Love Overdose” entrances with its addictive melody, and it stands out as what may just be the perfect summer blues anthem.
