“Dance on the Sky” – Surveyor

We had the pleasure of interviewing Surveyor, and here’s what they had to say:

Q: What’s your favorite vocal warm-up?

SURVEYOR: We don’t love to do vocal warm-ups but it’s always helpful. I usually start with some simple stretches and breathing exercises. Something like lip sirens, hi to low, through the break, or singing things fast like ‘many mumbling mice are making merry music in the moonlight, mighty nice’ usually helps get things moving.

Q: How long did it take to write “Dance on the Sky”?

SURVEYOR: We wrote “Dance on the Sky” over the course of a few days at the beginning of the pandemic. Bobby sent the track idea and I sang what I was hearing over it, mostly inspired by the unknown of how long the chaos and separation would last. We went back n forth from a distance until a few weeks later when we were able to get in the room to finish it together.

Q: What do you enjoy most about making music?

SURVEYOR: There’s nothing like the experience of a song coming into existence for the first time. It feels other-worldly and never gets old. The combination of ideas and perspectives being shared between friends is a special gift that gets even more exciting when you get to share it with the world.

Q: What do you do to get your creative juices flowing when you feel stuck while creating a song?

SURVEYOR: Go do something else. Sounds simplistic but it really helps us get unstuck. There are so many other important and inspiring outlets in everyday life. Things like going out in nature or even just being around people help remind us of the fact that you have to live life in order to write about it.

Q: In what way(s), do you think your sound has evolved since you started making music?

SURVEYOR: Our sound is always evolving. We try to never get stuck doing the same thing and work really hard to stay free creatively. It helps that we get to be in a band together because we’re always challenging each other to be the best version of who we are.

Q: Did you always know you would become musicians? At what point did you reach this realization/conclusion?.

SURVEYOR: We’ve both been doing music for so long it’s hard to remember when it started but I know we’ve never had a plan B.
