“Closure” – Obeeyay

We had the pleasure of interviewing Obeeyay, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: What motivated you to create and share “Closure”?

OBEEYAY: I had this relationship that lasted 5 years on and off since High School. After graduation, I left to serve a volunteer church mission in South Africa for two years and we wrote letters all the time. She promised to wait for me till I got back and when I got back we started dating and she wanted me to propose and the day that I did, she said no. It surprised me since she knew it was coming but got scared. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s gone through that, and I just like telling real stories about real situations.

Q: Wow. That’s brutal. What is the one thing you’d like the listeners to take away from this song?

OBEEYAY: Honestly, in terms of whatever crazy things have happened in their life, I don’t want them to feel like they’re alone. We all can relate to a moment you thought was gonna be amazing, and turned out to be the exact opposite. I like making music people can attach a memory to, good or bad.

Q: In what ways do you think your songs reflect your personality?

OBEEYAY: I’m a dude who likes to have a good time, and that’s exactly how I like my music to feel when my fans listen.

Q: What role do you think music played in your early life?

OBEEYAY: I grew up in a musical home where singing competitions became like a weekly ritual in my family. We’d battle every day and push one another. My Mom has 50+ years of voice teaching experience, and that definitely influenced me. I breathed it every day.

Q: Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire in them?

OBEEYAY: Michael Jackson – I love how his genre influenced so many to the point where different styles of music branched out from him. Usher – He was relevant for such a long time, he molded himself and stayed current, and not many can do that, I will always respect that.

Q: What projects are currently in the works?

OBEEYAY: I gotta new EP dropping this/early next year I’m very piped up about! New music, fresh sounds, new Obeeyay.
