“Contact High” – Only Bricks

“Contact High” by Only Bricks is one of those decadent, ethereal pop songs with a melody so memorable you’ll be humming it for weeks. Musically, the simple yet well-thought-out chord progression carries just the right amount of sentimentality while keeping it light-hearted and fun. The production teems with satisfying textures beneath the easy-going lyrics, making this track the perfect pick-me-up. In the end, you end up with a prime example of good, indulgent pop music.

It begins with a slurry of sparkling guitar, synth bass, and warm piano. With a brief swell, we plunge into the verse, which dwindles to a pulsing bass and a minimalistic drum groove. The vocals come in with this quickfire, syllable-driven melody, which manages to be simultaneously spacey and driving. The synths carry the momentum, becoming more sparse for the anticipation-laden pre-chorus then bursting through the mix with this rhythmic intensity for the high-energy moments.

The chorus comes with a new, high-pitched melody, some silky harmonies, and a vibrant set of instrumental textures. It succeeds in being rather climactic, but most of all, it’s melodically infectious. Pop songwriters can only hope to have a song this catchy. Only Bricks has mastered the art of tapping into the fleeting musical inspiration that can be so hard to access.

Be sure to give Only Bricks some love on your choice of social media or streaming service! “Contact High” is just one of many wonderful tracks by this dynamic duo. You won’t regret being a part of their rise to indie-pop success.
