“New York Beach” – Walk On Mars

Everyone has those places, or perhaps just one spot in this world that makes them feel as if the whirlwind of chaos that surrounds them isn’t so bad. However, for many…those places got stripped away from us in the past year and counting due to a global pandemic. Which is what made “New York Beach” by Walk On Mars both beautiful and melancholy all at the same time.

In this song, lead vocalist Mary Jo’s voice stands strong against the current that is crashing down around her. Ironically enough, beach sands and the waves of the ocean are what this narrative yearns for most in those instances. “New York Beach” represents that place in all of our lives where we go when we need a break. Be it a physical place like the shore or a deep state of meditation, “New York Beach” represents our personal happy places out there.

Musically, “New York Beach” has a lot going on. Its foundation holds strong in the rock realm with moments here and there reminiscent of bands that used to own the summer on Warped Tour. On the flip side, there is also a pop element in the way everything comes together that would lean this towards being a song one could hear on a major FM station sandwiched in between All Time Low and Olivia Rodrigo.

While some didn’t get to experience their “New York Beach” this past year due to one thing or another, they can find solace in this sound debut single from a band of wallflowers composed of a handful of Berklee School of Music students.
