“Tangerine” by Ainjo

Ainjo just released her new track “Tangerine,” today, 02/28/2025. It’s a cutting and empowering jab against the cheaters and players of the world, all tied together with lush R&B greatness.

“Tangerine” has an instrumentation that has a subtly sweet blend of coziness and sensuality. It’s a little lo-fi and stands out with jazzy R&B tones. That R&B sound with a jazz influence extends into the vocals, as they work with a full brassy tone that smoothly bends, transitions, and riffs between notes. The vocal flow is definitely a highlight, as the riff-heavy sound seems to never miss a beat that also waves between stronger and softer points with ease. It works well in both the higher and lower tones of Ainjo’s voice as well. In general, there is an abundance of star power that can be found here.

The lyrics in this track come from the perspective of someone who was wronged by their lover, who finds themself in others DMs, tries to sneak around, plays games, and lies. But, it doesn’t hit a sad note, it hits one of empowerment. “When the tables turn where ya gonna be?,” the tide turns lyrically. Basically it says, “You want to mess with my heart? Just see what I can do.” Honestly, there’s something healing in hearing the power of the message this track has, and it’s here to show other women that they deserve better than subpar treatment.

Ainjo is a So-Cal R&B powerhouse who got her start by singing cover tracks on social media in 2017. But, she’s come a long way since those covers, jumpstarting her career of making original music with her release of “Cash Flaws” that September. After several more single releases, Ainjo released “555,” her debut EP, in May 2019. Shortly after, she started performing and landed herself in the SXSW and Vibe Tribe Showcase festivals, among others. In addition to being a musician, she’s a Navy Sailor, and based on the quality of her music, she does well at balancing both careers. This is surely an artist to keep an eye on, especially as she’s on her way toward an upcoming project, “Diary Entries.”
