“Spinach In My Teeth” by BIZZY

If you’ve ever dated someone shitty, and your friends pretended to love them while you were in the relationship but later told you they hated them when it ended, you’ll understand singer-songwriter BIZZY’s spirited song “Spinach In My Teeth.” We had the pleasure of interviewing BIZZY, and here’s what she had to say:

Q: What role do you think music played in the early years of your life?

BIZZY: Music was never really at the forefront of my life when I was younger. I was so focused on sports, that music was really just a hobby for me until around the age of 17. I injured my back and couldn’t compete at the level I was competing at, so it was almost as if all at once my world shifted, and music was the obvious choice. I think having music not be at the forefront of my life for a long time helped me in a lot of ways. It allowed me to enjoy music and listen as a consumer, rather than a composer. I was able to find music I loved without any pressure of comparison. I think that translates into a lot of my music today.

Q: What did you enjoy the most about writing the lyrics of “Spinach In My Teeth”? And what does this song mean to you?

BIZZY: “Spinach in my Teeth” was actually written twice. I wrote the song once by myself and liked the concept, but the song didn’t quite hit the way I wanted it to. I then brought it into a co-write and explained the concept and they were ALL FOR IT! We had so much fun messing with words and lyrics to get the right amount of cleverness and humor, while also keeping the narrative serious and real. The song “Spinach in my Teeth” means a lot to me because it talks about how I was with a guy for five years (and a really gross month) and for that whole length of time, everyone said they lovedddd him, but when we finally broke up everyone told me they never liked him! It felt as if I was the only one that couldn’t see it, and nobody told me. Like the feeling of walking around with spinach in your teeth.

Q: In what way(s), do you think your sound has evolved since the beginning of your career?

BIZZY: I listen back to old songs I wrote like 5 years ago and CAN NOT believe that that’s where I started. My sound has evolved and grown so much, but not in a way that strays from me. I think my sound has evolved as much as I have. That’s one beautiful thing about music, or at least the way I write mine is that I write from exactly where I am and what I’m going through, so it’s going to reflect where/ who I am at the moment in time.

Q: You’ve written songs for other artists previously. Of these songs you’ve written, what would you say is your favorite? Why?

BIZZY: My favorite song I’ve written for another artist has actually not come out yet! It’s set to release VERY soon so be on the lookout 🙂

Q: Haha! I look forward to listening to it then! How do you balance your music career with your social life/other obligations?

BIZZY: This is something I’m actually working on right now. I think it was easier for me to balance music with my social life when I was a pure writer. Now that I am an artist, I feel like it consumes every part of my life, which I actually LOVE, but I know that there needs to be healthy boundaries set. I think the biggest realization I’m having with all of this, is that I can love music with all my heart but I can’t control it, and I can’t control how people respond to it. Learning that music is what I do, not who I am has helped me ALOT.

Q: As a musician, what’s one thing you’re really looking forward to achieving this year?

BIZZY: I’m reallying looking forward to playing more live shows! Live shows are one of my favorite parts about being an artist because you get to really feel the energy of the songs and audience and connect with the listeners!
