We had the pleasure of interviewing David Arlo, and here’s what he had to say:
Q: How long have you been making music?
ARLO: I’ve been making music for so long, I can’t really remember a life when I wasn’t making it.
Q: In what way(s) would you say your sound has evolved along the way?
ARLO: I think it’s become more soulful in ways. I think my lyrics have become better because I have the experience to draw from to write about. I think my songs have always been somewhat emotional and heartfelt, but I think I’m even more honest and raw in these new songs. I’m putting it all out there on these records.
Q: What inspired “Speeding”?
ARLO: Rejection. There was just a point in my life where I was hearing so many NOs, I was like what the hell is wrong with me. In my personal life, my professional life – I started to think have I done something to someone. How can one person have so much bad luck! Then I realized that I have to do something about my circumstances and change what’s not working in my life! And that’s what I did.
Q: What effect would you like this song and your music, in general, to have on listeners?
ARLO: I hope it inspires people to do the same. People are really going through a hard time at the moment, and believe me I don’t have the answers to my own issues let alone offering my advice to others, but I hope people find some sort of comfort in knowing that this is a universal feeling. We all go through some messed up shit.
Q: What does “Speeding” mean to you?
ARLO: “Speeding” is like the beginning, it’s like the starter meal at a 3-course dinner. It’s almost like a rebirth in a sense. It feels like a record I’ve wanted to make all more life.
Q: How has your 2023 been so far and what’s one thing you’re really looking forward to doing this year?
ARLO: 2023 has been so long. I can’t believe we’re already halfway done. I need a holiday, a vacation! I’m excited to play the new records live. I’m excited to be in front of an audience again.
