“Sing It With Me” by Jemma Johnson

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jemma Johnson and here’s what she had to say:

Q: I love the vocals on this song! Do you have a favorite vocal training routine?

JOHNSON: Thank you so much, I like to mix up vocal warm-ups but my favourite part of my warm-up routine is actually full body stretches that reduce the tension in my neck, back, and shoulders – it makes such a difference to a performance, especially if the nerves are kicking in.

Q: What influence do you think music played in the early years of your life?

JOHNSON: I grew up in a house full of music so I was immersed in it from a small age and my dream was always to be a singer/songwriter. My main influences growing up were Damien Rice, Paramore, and David Bowie which really inspired how I write my songs.

Q: Who is one artist you would definitely love to work with at some point in your career?

JOHNSON: It’s difficult to answer this! I would love to write with Julia Michaels, but singing with Damien Rice is up there on my top 10 on my bucket list so…

Q: What’s the story behind “Sing it with Me”?

JOHNSON: I wrote it the day after a solo night out, I had recently broken up with someone and I just really wanted to get out of the house so I did it. It was a weird night because half of me was loving spending time by myself, being able to do exactly what I wanted, and then the other half was getting caught up in memories from bars we’d been to before or streets we’d walked down together. It was a very poignant moment for me during the healing process and so the next day I sat down at the piano and began to write it.

Q: How would you like listeners to respond to this song?

JOHNSON: I don’t really feel it’s my place to say how I’d like people to respond, what I do love though is how people interpret the meaning and relate to it differently. I wrote this from a heartbreak perspective but so many listeners have said it’s helped them through grieving the loss of someone. I’ve always loved how powerful music is, it’s helped me through so much in my life. If my songs can help others in even a small way to get through a difficult time then that means the world to me.

Q: What’s one thing you’re really looking forward to achieving musically this year?

JOHNSON: Alongside some big festival slots I have in the UK this summer, I’m currently writing a lot of new material that is building to something bigger which I’ve been waiting to do for a long time. It’s the most exciting time I’ve had in my career so far and I can’t wait for what’s on the horizon!
