“Simpler Times” – CHAR

From being a carefree kid with zero responsibilities to adulthood purgatory AKA college when parties were the norm and midterms were a worry for tomorrow. These are all prime examples of moments from our past that make their way to the front of our minds when life leans towards overwhelming. London’s own CHAR knows all too well about these moments, moments she calls “Simpler Times.’

Not only is “Simpler Times” the latest single from her  December 2021 EP, but it’s also the titular track as well. A fitting track to name an EP after, this song comes through with a force that is composed of equal parts pertaining to vocal performance and musical goodness. CHAR shines in this 21st century take on Neo-Soul that delivers audible charm in an expected manner, but also brings something new to the table to snack on that has a bit of an edge to it. I like that “Simpler Times” does its own thing, but at the same time could be on any mainstream station nestled in between Dua Lipa’s latest and a banger from Ariana Grande.

CHAR has been impressing many for some time now. Everyone from people at KISS FM to BBC has been on her side thanks to previous singles like 2020’s “Same Again” and this year’s “Walk Without Fear.” The latter explores the things women deal with in life in an anthemic way. CHAR continues to delve into matters of today with “Simpler Times” as it deals with something very crucial in today’s world, and that’s mental health.
