“Show & Prove” – Kevin Ross

“Show and Prove” by Kevin Ross is a brilliant example of modern R&B sensibilities. With smooth, acrobatic vocals and a crisp production value, it’s satisfying and unceasingly cool. Plus, the chord choices are musically interesting and the melodies drape themselves over the mix with this infectious, delightful quality. By the end, you’ll be melting into the decadent harmonies and sweet instrumental textures.

A series of bittersweet chords underpin a few distorted vocal samples. With the addition of a steady hi-hat groove, the vocals begin toggling between two or three rhythmically delivered notes. Kevin peppers the end of each phrase with a melisma or a unique melodic choice, giving us a sneak peek of his impressive range. Background vocals indicate the beginning of the pre-chorus, effortlessly switching between unison and harmony to the most delectable effect. A sweep of a few chimes sends us into the chorus: “Believe it ‘cause I promise I can show you.” Kevin tumbles through an indulgent, memorable melody.

The rest of the song unfolds in a similar form but with a lot of added musical elements to keep things interesting. The real highlight of this track is Kevin Ross’s insane vocal abilities. He nails his falsetto. He delivers meticulously syllabic phrases. He performs complicated runs like it’s nothing. If you’re not left astonished, you’re not paying enough attention. Be sure to give Kevin Ross a follow and a stream on your choice of social media platform or streaming service—there’s no more deserving R&B artist out there.
