“Scabs” – KJ(!)

“Scabs” by KJ(!) takes us on his music spaceship and transports its listeners to planet funk. It is very reminiscent of Tyler, The Creator’s type of music, especially from his album “IGOR.” The chorus is repetitive and hypnotic, letting everyone know that he is seeking romance that is lowkey and secretive, which challenges some of the hardships he is facing that he mentions within the song. There is a unique blend of wordplay within “Scabs,” highlighting iconic pop culture references like TLC’s “No Scrubs” and “The Pursuit of Happiness,” a nod to Kid Cudi. KJ(!) doesn’t shy away from the messy realities of being lovesick in “Scabs,” but instead embraces it with a upbeat funk you can’t help but get up and get down to.
