The harmonious unification of their voices intertwined with the melancholy yet somewhat endearing narrative of “Ruins” by Drew Schueler and Kiki Halliday is nothing short of intoxicating.
“Maybe it’s broken, but maybe it’s one of a kind.”
After an intro that gives this Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” vibe, we get that initial line and it sets up so much. We’ve all been in those relationships, and even situations, that we know probably aren’t the best but we grasp onto every sliver of hope. Why? Call it a hopeless romantic gesture or just naivety, but regardless of its label – it’s an ever-present notion that happens around the world every second of the day. Drew Schueler and Kiki Halliday capture that with their back and forth of ambitious wishful thinking as they trudge forward as a pair that will soon go their separate ways.
There are also moments in the song that isn’t just about holding onto hope, but also letting go of the fear of the end – and there is beauty in that idea of throwing caution to the wind. Both aspects are as endearing as they are reckless – but at the end of the day, couldn’t love be comparable to each?
Working together on this, Drew Schueler and Kiki Halliday form a beautiful bond. Not shocking at all given each has carved out an impressive path for themselves. In recent years Halliday has been featured in everything from ‘The Kardashians’ to the hit Netflix series, ‘Queer Eye.’ As for Drew, he’s worked around the clock starting in bands, and then working his way to being a vibrant name in the pop realm with songs like “Head Start” and “Constellation.”
