kerman just released their new album Spark on May 26. This album includes the standout track, “Make My Getaway.”
“Make My Getaway” came out recently, but it captures the fundamentals of the pop punk genre in a way that feels like a throwback. However, its modern production value makes it come off with amazingly clear sonics. The quick fingerpicking and thrashy strumming provide an absolute drive forward, and the vocals have a perfect mix between a belt and an emo whine. This track has a really infectious melody to it, begging to be sung along in car rides and to be played over and over again. There’s something about it that sounds like freedom, which plays well into the lyrics.
The intro of this track does well at introducing the guitars with a bit of a math rock flow. It rises in volume over time before the guitars move from an ethereal reverby sound to more of a thrash. There’s a lot of prowess in how quickly the guitars hit their chords and notes, and the vocals enter with absolute power. The drums play into the rest of the instrumentation well to turn the rhythm up a notch, but every part rests in its own rhythmic intricacy, which really brings everything to life. Everything about this track finds a way to shine with how absolutely crisp it is, and it stands out as being addictive!
Lyrically, “Make My Getaway” is about wanting to escape the mundanity of life. It talks about being sick of how things are, feeling trapped, and wanting to run toward change. Also, it seems like, to the narrator, this is the only escape from feeling caged up. This track gets into how life feels pointless and how they feel trapped daydreaming, and instead, want to turn those dreams of getting out into a reality. They want to make their getaway from everything else to a more peaceful and fulfilling life. Also, the energy that the musicality brings to this track actually feels like rushing toward something new. In this, the connection between the music and the lyricism comes off as absolutely cohesive.
“Make My Getaway” is a part of kerman’s new album Spark, so anyone who enjoys it has an entire body of work to explore.
