Check out Phoenix.REM’s new track, “Disappear,” which is a part of an EP of the same name. It just dropped earlier this month!
“Disappear” by Phoenix.REM is an exciting piano-driven indie pop track that blends danceability and emotion. Its mix of piano, other strings, and synths builds into a sound with a full range of harmony. This sound, while utilizing acoustic and electric instrumentation, still jumps out with cohesivity and life. It starts with a piano build that introduces some punchier guitars before fading back to just piano and vocals for a bit. It establishes a vague classical vibe with a pop basis, but this is broken through, starting with a kick drum, then introducing the full band.
Introspective lyrics, a catchy chorus, and instrumentally captivating verses come together to make this track forward-moving while also catchy. There’s a fullness with the amount of instrumentation used, but the production keeps everything crisp, the mix allows the tones to all shine, and the dynamic flow gives different highlights to different parts of the sound over time. In general, there’s something joyful about the way that it flows, but this is contrasted with lyricism that tackles a faded relationship and the need to move forward.
More on the lyrics, what “Disappear” starts with is, “Some people come, and others go / I’ve got phantom pain of you in my soul / the image of you haunts me.” This track captures the end of a relationship, the pain that it can bring, and a desire to find something better. The way this track captures a breakup is one of loss, grief, and change, using depictions of winter and a ghostly presence. In general, it’s about losing someone and having them become a piece of the past, never to be seen again. This contrasts with the upbeat music and delivers a hard message, but because of the more joyful sound, there’s an aspect of hope!
