“Just Can’t Get You Out Of My Bed” by POPE is a breath of fresh air. In the vast sea of pop music, it’s hard to find a song that feels simultaneously different, accessible, and genuinely enjoyable. This song does it all. The melody is memorable. The production ebbs and flows with satisfying dynamics and textural sound design. The vocals are clean-cut and sultry. You won’t find a better display of all of the culturally significant elements of recent pop music.
A covered vocal motif starts the song off. With a brief cymbal swell, we’re propelled into a broken-down version of the groove, rhythmically accented by synths and ethereal background vocals. The verse slides in with a few snaps. The melody takes on this ever-moving, syllable-heavy shape, juxtaposing the previous chorus melody, which is a bit slower and more melodious. A four-on-the-floor-style kick comes in about halfway through to set the foundation for the eventual drop. A short pre-chorus drops the percussion all together, emphasizing harmonies and more legato melodic elements.
“I just can’t get you out of my bed / There’s just nobody else I’m dreaming of,” the drums kick in suddenly, a satisfying rhythmic departure from the sparseness of the first half. We’re served the chorus once again, this time with high-energy accompaniment, acting as the perfect climax. If you’re not singing along by now, you’re doing it wrong.
Be sure to give this track a listen! If you’re into electronic pop music, this will most certainly be your cup of tea.
