“Hard Act to Follow” – Billy Lockett feat. GoldLink

Breakups are the inevitable truth of most relationships. As common as they are and for as many of them as we’ll have in our lifetime, they are never easy. Even Billy Lockett with the admirable triumph of “Hard Act to Follow” highlights the pain of a relationship coming to an end with some help from GoldLink.

It is clear from the start that Billy Lockett was feeling some type of way when “Hard Act to Follow” was penned. There is an insurmountable amount of emotional affliction piled on this song, but what holds it all together at its seams is the little voice in the back of Lockett’s head that assures him that the conclusion of this tale wasn’t on him for there are instances where time is needed and the person on the other side of this story wasn’t willing to let the clock run a bit longer. As much is said in the line, “I guess you gave up before I could change.”

Billy Lockett comes through with a powerful, heart-wrenching performance that showcases an inner strength that also balances out a heart that’s clearly broken. What GoldLink adds to this track is this sort of whirlwind moment in the middle that sounds like the inner monologue of someone spiraling through the motions. You get this quick break from Lockett’s soulful proclamations, and in place, GoldLink delivers an almost manic-stricken performance. Together, they showcase two sides of one devastated individual.

Billy Lockett has been doing his thing for several years now. In 2015 he dropped his debut EP, ‘Burn It Down’ and since then a few more records have followed. That includes 2020’s ‘Together at Home.’ To hear more from Billy Lockett, including “Hard Act to Follow,” make sure to check him out on all major music and streaming sites today.
