“Happy Go Lover” – Bronze Whale and Primo The Alien

“Happy Go Lover” by Bronze Whale and Primo The Alien is a warm, infectious groove brimming with charming, unique lyricism and organic vocals. As the bouncy synths undulate and the crisp electronic drums pulse, the singer utters a slew of sultry melodies. This song has many great qualities, but its most impressive one is its success in channeling the ever-fleeting concept of catchiness. Pop songs always seek it out, but can rarely pin it down this well. So, let’s delve into the infectious, funky goodness that is “Happy Go Lover.”

“Something ‘bout you / No one else can smile like you do,” the breathy, nearly whispered vocals come in over a dreamy pad and a steady barrage of hi-hats. As the verse continues, new textures layer in. The pre-chorus sports different percussive aspects and a pleasantly descriptive list of sensations. The moment we hear the hook—the beat sets in. The rhythm becomes thicker. Vocal samples soar in and out of the mix. The chords even get a bit louder, bringing the emotional gravity to the forefront as only the best progressions can.

For the second verse, the energy dissolves back into a soft, anticipatory atmosphere. The dynamics come and go like this for the rest of the song, eventually culminating in a busy, electric, climactic ending. If you’re not totally absorbed at this point, you’re doing it wrong. The sound design, performance, and writing that went into this project are exquisite. Be sure to follow Bronze Whale and Primo The Alien! You’ll be glad you did!
