Greg Pearson embodies the emotionally vulnerable artistry we so desperately need in today’s society. With lyrics that manage to be accessible and gorgeously poetic all at once, “Half a Man” will fill you with catharsis. From the full, choir-like background vocals to the classically (and effectively) pop chord progression, the musical aspects are quite frankly transcendent. Sit back, relax, and allow yourself to melt into the emotional gratification that is “Half a Man.”
“I was always confident / Happy with the skin I’m in,” Greg begins, his vocals traversing a quick yet natural melody. An acoustic guitar strums expectantly in the background. Greg starts to belt as the pre-chorus falls into place. Swells of ambient piano drift by, accompanied by a steady barrage of snaps. His words describe the damage someone inflicted on him as a child, and how he was made to feel worthless. With each painful assertion, Greg takes back his power, explaining that, while he may have felt devalued, the person who wronged him is really the one whose value is in question. It’s an extremely powerful and important message. When you’ve gone through something terrible at the hands of another person, it’s important to understand your worth and to never let their actions affect it.
An explosion of textures appears in the chorus. Electric guitars strum power chords and sweet, twinkly riffs. The drums get busier. The bass fills up the mix with deep, rumbly satisfaction. Not to mention, the melody takes on an incredibly infectious shape. With this dynamic climax, we reach the peak of emotional intention.
Be sure to give “Half a Man” a listen! It’s not only moving but also meticulously produced and arranged!
