“Criminal” – Elyse Aeryn

Elyse Aeryn combines all of the best aspects of folk, rock, Americana, and soul to bring us “Criminal.” With its Sheryl Crow-esque instrumentation and powerfully belted vocals, this song is sort of reminiscent of the early-mid 2000s. And while it is trendy to romanticize these pristinely retro sounds, Elyse also makes sure to pepper in her own unique and original style. Plus, the lyrics are endlessly cathartic. If you’re in the market for a new break-up song, you couldn’t beat this one.

The drums count us in—culminating in a full rock band toggling between two chords in a minor key. Elyse throws a few pithy vocal ad-libs on top, for good measure. “I felt your words through the glass / I tried not to overreact / But I got in my head about it,” she suddenly croons, her warm, soulful tone on full display. Electric guitar and organ carry through a chord progression underneath, defining this bluesy, modal atmosphere with grace.

In comes the chorus: “I’ll be the criminal.” Elyse pushes through some angsty rasp, tying a bow on the ‘if you need to hate me to move on, then that’s okay’ message she’s built up so far. It’s a simple phrase, but it so perfectly encapsulates the theme.

Stay tuned for a guitar solo and a lot more impressive vocal moments! This track is chock full of brilliant musicianship. If you like what you hear, be sure to give Elyse Aeryn a follow on your choice of social media platform or streaming service!
