We’ve always worn a variety of masks throughout our lives as who we are with friends may not be who we are at work, but with the internet being more and more of a staple in our everyday lives – a new mask has formed. We have shifted into having online personalities that vary from who we are. Sometimes in the most drastic ways. Artists like Baby Queen and Gym Class Heroes have dived into internet culture over the years, and now yin is taking it on with their latest single, “cool online.”
With a sound that is reminiscent of Paramore’s ‘After Laughter,’ “cool online” blends its vibrant beats that give way to moving the body this way and that with a more indie vocal to deliver a song that pops with a bit of depth. Lyrically, anyone who’s spent time deep-diving into what logging on has done to our collective psyche will appreciate it, but those who prefer to just enjoy the music at hand – they can do that as well because this is a catchy song. I walked away for an hour to tend to an errand and found myself humming along.
This indie-pop band doesn’t hold back as the song feels satirical at times, somewhat shining a light on the stupidity of this technological addiction we all share and cannot shake. Not only a good song but hopefully a bit of a wake-up call to many who need a reality check – a lot of followers online does not make one cool. Take it from yin.
This is one of three new singles yin has dropped since the start of 2022. To hear “cool online” as well as the rest, make sure to check out yin on all major music and streaming sites today.
