Singer-songwriter Karin Fransson’s angelic vocals are heard in her new EP, a three-song body of art titled “Commuter Diaries, Vol. 3.” Serving as the third installment in her musical franchise, this EP is full of introspective lyrics dealing with life in the post-pandemic world and mundane moments in everyday life.
The EP takes listeners on a journey, each song having a unique sound. The opening track, “Leave it Alone,” is an emotional ballad, highlighting Fransson’s soft, smooth-like-butter vocals. The viola and string arrangement heard in the background creates a bittersweet melody to the track, adding to the emotional aspect of the song. The quiet bass lines provided by Morten Ankarfeldt add depth. The touching lyrics tackle the vulnerable moments of admitting the end of a relationship. Whether romantic or platonic, Fransson states over and over again that she’ll “leave it alone.” She won’t pick up the phone to call that person–she’ll let them walk out if that’s what they want. The emotional depth of these lyrics is sure to resonate with many listeners.
Following the melancholic feeling of “Leave it Alone” is the jazzy “Mindless Mutter,” sounding like an early 2000s pop song in the best way possible. The smooth, silky vocals, the upbeat instrumental, and the fun-loving lyrics create a loving, exciting track that takes away from the melancholiness of the opening song. Gisli Kristjansson is responsible for the drum and synth arrangements, adding an electrifying and vibrant feeling to the track.
The final song on the EP, “Burning Shivers,” is a sultry tune that features the electric guitar, adding an exhilarating soft rock element. The EP features both a studio and live version of the song, highlighting her innate talent. “Burning Shivers” is the ideal ending for “Commuter Diaries, Vol. 3”, as it serves as an ideal mix of the previous two songs. The track was produced in collaboration with Steve Holmes, an LCCM alum, adding a touch of expertise to the EP.
