“Bright Eyed” – Ian Biggs

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ian Biggs, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: What was your inspiration for “Bright Eyed”?

BIGGS: Hi, thanks so much for having me! The inspiration for “Bright Eyed” was I was dating someone and ultimately I felt it wasn’t quite right. Nothing to do with her but more a pattern I had discovered in myself which I found worrisome. I would keep getting in and out of things and couldn’t figure out why. There are bits and pieces of a few people from my past in there but the song is largely self-reflection. “The day burns bright before it sets” is in reference to walking on the beach in California and watching the sunset; something we loved to do together. It is a metaphor for enjoying the time you have together because even if things don’t work out that time is still meaningful.

Q: Did you have a clear direction/idea of how you wanted this song to sound before you started creating it or did it come to you in bits and pieces?

BIGGS: This song was kind of an interesting one. The first verse and hook happened pretty quickly and then I left it alone and revisited it a year later and wrote the second verse. The original plan was to keep it completely acoustic but at the last minute, I decided to add some bass and drums to make it more climactic. Most backward if you will. From there I started playing guitar and writing poems which eventually became songs.

Q: How did you get into creating music?

BIGGS: In eighth grade, we spent the entire year studying poetry in English class. One day my teacher shared a poem called “The Wind Cries Mary” which I later learned was a Jimi Hendrix song. I discovered one of the guitar greats through his lyrics, almost backwards if you will. From there I started playing guitar and writing poems which eventually became songs.

Q: What would you say is your best memory from your musical journey, so far?

BIGGS: As far as the best memory it is really tough to pick just one. I recently opened up for one of my favorite artists, Dermot Kennedy, so that was pretty cool. I had a really memorable tour in 2019 with my old band (Whatever We Are) which was a ton of fun.

Q: Outside of music, what do you enjoy doing?

BIGGS: While music does consume much of my life I do try and find time for other things. I play ice hockey, typically a few days a week, and I love traveling although it is typically music related.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?

BIGGS: I am planning on releasing a single every six weeks for the rest of the year at least. At some point, I will organize them all into an album but right now I am happy with one at a time so each one can have the proper focus.
