We had the pleasure of interviewing Zion Isaiah, and here’s what he had to say:
Q: Did you have a clear direction/idea of how you wanted “bad habits” to sound and the effect you wanted it to have on listeners before you started creating it?
ISAIAH: Yeah, Definitely! It’s probably my most introspective song so far and I really hope that resonates with listeners. I showed my producer (Logan Murphy) the initial idea and he really took the song to the next level. We referenced a lot of The 1975, Nightly, and The Japanese House. Logan envisioned the chorus having a big backing choir, which our talented friends, EleveN2wenty really killed.
Q: Could you describe what a typical studio session for this song was like?
ISAIAH: Each day looked pretty different. I really enjoy writing at the same time the song is being produced. Something about working quickly and making decisions purely off instinct feels like magic and I love it. I think bad habits is a good example of that process. I brought the song to Logan on day one with a demo of the verses and pre chorus. He started building out a skeleton of the track as I went in and out of the room, working out the missing parts on a piano. We had the structure of the song by the second or third day and started to track what would become my final vocal.
Q: What do you like the most about this song?
ISAIAH: Lyrically, it’s my strongest writing so far and I’m proud of that. I really wanted it to feel almost like a frantic journal entry and I think I achieved that tone.
Q: What projects are you currently working on?
ISAIAH: “bad habits” is the title track of a 6 song EP that will be released in full on Friday, June 16. Besides that, I’m staying busy writing and plan to release as often as possible this year.
Q: Outside creating music, what are your hobbies?
ISAIAH: I play and watch lots of soccer! and thrifting – I love clothes. That’s about it.
Q: What would you like to say to your supporters?
ISAIAH: I’m really thankful to everyone that’s supported me and my songs so far. As a small, indie-artist, it means the world to see people connecting with the music I make and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
