“Stranger” by Jordyn Sugar

Q: I enjoyed how catchy and vocally variegated “Stranger” is! Can you walk me through the creative process of making this song?

JORDYN: When I met up with my co-writer Dante Hart, she told me that she came up with this cool melody, that actually ended up being the main chorus of the song and the very catchy hook “DaDaDaDa”. We worked on different arrangements for the verses and bridge of the song. The verses were meant to talk about the stranger and situation. the chorus was meant to be a way to tell the audience that I’m over the situation and I’m done letting it affect my life. The bridge was meant to be more emotional as it’s the acceptance that they are no longer the friend they used to be and then it ends of again with the chorus showing repeating showing that I’m officially over the situation.

Q: What did you enjoy most about making this song?

JORDYN: This was the first song I wrote that was completely personal to me which made it very authentic and real. I found that the lyrics just came easily as they were real emotions and thoughts, so I didn’t feel like we just adding words to rhyme.

Q: Was there a decisive moment in your life that set you on your path as a musician?

JORDYN: In my heart I have always known that I would do something in music. I started drumming at 3 and had a huge passion for music my whole life. I started singing at the age of 13 but I had no intention or thought in my mind that it would be a possibility as I really wasn’t that good at the time. As time went on and I became better i really wanted to showcase my voice but there was always a blockage in my confidence to do so, so it stayed private. At the age of 16 I posted my first singing video on TikTok. I figured that if I wasn’t good only my 100 followers at the time would see it and that would be it but I got a different and unexpected reaction. My friends and family were in shock as they had no idea I could sing like that. The more I was motivated, the more I kept singing till August 13 2020, when everything changed. This is the day I was recognized by my longtime idol Justin Bieber, who posted one of my TikTok videos on his Instagram story for his 144 million followers to hear and see. This not only gave me the confidence to continue singing but the moment I realized that this was my path!

Q: What’s the music scene like in Montreal, Quebec? And how has it influenced your music?

JORDYN: There is a lot of diverse music in Montreal. There are a lot of music festivals that happen yearly around the city. Growing up I have been exposed to a lot of different genres and eras of music. I would always love going to these festivals just to hear and watch the live bands play. I remember when I was about 10 years old, I went to a Canada Day festival and I asked the drummer if I can play the drums. He insisted and I started playing with the band. People started to clap and video us, as they couldn’t believe that a 10 year old was keeping up so smoothly with the band.

Q: Who are your biggest influences?

JORDYN: My biggest influences growing up were Elton John, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson. I grew up listening to a lot of music from the 80s. This is why some of my songs may have an 80s feel to it. These artists shaped the music that I create today and have had such an impact on my artistry.

Q: Is there anything you’d like to say to your supporters?

JORDYN: I wouldn’t be here without my supporters and amazing team. They are more than just a fan base; they are part of my story and who I am. I love the relationships that I’m building with my supporters and want them to know that every song I write and put out is with them in mind. Love you and thank you all!
