We had the pleasure of interviewing Penelope Robin, and here’s what she had to say:
Q: . What got you into creating music?
ROBIN: For as long as I can remember I was in a recording studio. My dad’s a music producer so I witnessed him working with artists creating music since I was a small child. I remember falling asleep on the couch in the studio late at night while he was blaring music and laughing with the artists. It was a fascinating world to me and it was all I wanted to do. I wrote melody ideas and lyrics daily, and at age 7, after much begging, my dad finally sat with me on the piano and we wrote my first official song. It was called Little Bitty Heart and it was about my dog…haha ♡○♡ after that it has always been non stop music in my life.
Q: Do you play any instruments? If so, which? If not, which would you like to learn?
ROBIN: Yes, I play guitar and a bit of piano. I also play bass but that’s more for fun and I’d love to get good at drums…but it’s the one instrument I find the hardest to master : )
Q: Who is one artist you would definitely love to work with at some point in your career?
ROBIN: That’s such a hard question because I find there is so much talent and I have so many influences that have inspired me. Definitely Bruno Mars or Taylor Swift. They both have that songwriting genius that I admire and aspire to become to one day, so they would definitely top of my wish list. 🙂
Q: What inspired you to create “Taking Back Sunday”?
ROBIN: A bad situation I was in. An unhealthy relationship that made me forget who I was and how strong I am. I don’t even know how it happened but there I was, feeling small and empty letting someone tell me I was no good. I was lucky to have an incredible support system around me that pretty much forced me to open my eyes and see how lost I was. This is where this song comes from. Sunday is a day of peace, a day you get to relax and spend time with family and friends. For me the song represents gaining back strength and is a reminder that no matter how much you’ve lost you can always get it back.
Q: How do you think social media has changed the music industry?
ROBIN: Significantly. I grew up on social media so I really don’t know any different, but I hear my parents speak in a romantic way about those days when you would buy an artist album and play it a million times and it was one of your most prized possessions.Today I think social media gives everyone a chance to be heard and there is so much more talent out there that we never really knew about. You have to always be creating and reinventing yourself, but with that being said, I believe great music always rises to the top and even though times have changed and things move faster we still appreciate and celebrate a timeless song. That’s what I aspire for, to write songs that are unforgettable. 🙂
Q: How would you like listeners to respond to this song?
ROBIN: I just want people to connect and enjoy. I want them to react to my music. Good or bad…haha I prefer an I love it or I hate it to a “meh” – cause that means I am getting people’s attention and that’s exciting!
