In “Stop Fighting It,” April Jai wants listeners to know that they don’t need to agonize over who will make that first move when it’s clear they both want more. If you’ve been counting your “he loves me, he loves me not,” this might just be the nudge you need to stop and do something about it. Who says you can’t make the first move because you’re a girl? We had the pleasure of interviewing April Jai, and here’s what she had to say:
Q: What was your songwriting process for “Stop Fighting It”?
JAI: It started as a voice memo when I was on my way to a show, I was feeling myself and came up with initial lyrics that became the first verse. From there I was just thinking of the fact that us girls don’t have to wait around for the other person to make the first move when it’s so clear that you both want more. It’s such a different vibe from what I usually write but I’ve loved showcasing another side of myself with this spicy, badass song.
Q: What was your favorite part of the production process? Why?
JAI: Seeing a song go from voice memo to full production is the best part! It can sometimes be a painful and tedious process to go from one to the other but the end product always makes it so worth it! Also recording the vocals for this song was SO MUCH FUN!
Q: What’s one thing you’d like listeners to take away from this song?
JAI: That you don’t have to wait around for the other person to make the first move… be a bad bitch (consensually of course!)
Q: Who’s one artist you’d love to work with at some point in your career?
JAI: There are so many! There’s a lot I’d love to write with like Julia Michaels, Lori Mckenna, and Upsahl. I’d also love to go on tour opening up for another female artist, maybe Fletcher, Gracie Abrams, or Sabrina Carpenter! At some point I’d also love to do a duet/feature with a male artist like NF or Hunter Hayes (both very different artists but I love them both so much!)
Q: What do you enjoy doing besides making music?
JAI: I’m a huge romance novel reader, Booktok really got me hooked a few years ago and I’ve now read over 200 of them. I’m also a huge gamer and I love to paint too!
Q: What’s one song that can always put you in a good mood?
JAI: My all-time favourite good mood track is Rascal Flatts’ version of “Life Is A Highway”, it ALWAYS puts me in the happiest mood but right now my ultimate hype track for when I’m feeling discouraged is “Rush” by Ayra Starr.
