“Escape” – Aspy Jones

“I want to find my way out but it’s a part of me.”

Have you ever had one of those weeks in which everything directed at you was the wrong thing, and then you heard a song that was oh so right? That was my exact situation upon hearing “Escape” by Aspy Jones. While some particulars make us different, our inner anxieties made for one heck of a connection.

In a song that could be delivered in any genre and still give way to this universal message, Aspy Jones comes through with this upbeat folk track that dives into the depths of what he’s dealt with for much of his life. Mental health problems have been a constant since his teens, and he channeled those into his latest single, “Escape.” The simple title covers a vast issue many of us have in regards to the inner workings of our minds. Sometimes it’s hard to escape those lingering thoughts when they are indeed a part of our general makeup.

Despite this being a real-life issue many face daily, Aspy Jones has spun it into an enjoyable music moment. His voice carries a lot of weight as its strength is ever-present, and the music comes through with a bit of vibrancy that in many ways left me feeling hopeful of not only Jones’ escape, but my own.

Aspy Jones released his debut, “Hatches” back in 2018 and since then has dropped new music every year since, including his debut EP in 2019, ‘Tantamount.’ “Escape” is his latest and first release of 2022 and invites listeners into his world of living with ASD and anxiety. An honest look at someone’s journey, yet a song that offers a universal moment of connection.
