“Thinking” – Jean Root

Finally an anthem for those who tend to lean toward overthinking, and it’s all thanks to Jean Root. Her latest single, “Thinking,” weaves the inner workings of the everyday mind with this pop meets R&B style that comes across as smooth as new silk linens.

The airy way in which Jean Root presented this musical narrative was very reminiscent of Corinne Bailey Rae. There was this beautiful groove in which her vocals followed from start to finish that made for a pleasant listening experience. On the flip side, the lyrics painted a clear portrait of the inner turmoil that happens when our mind starts to well, have a mind of its own. Oftentimes we think, what if I could just let go of the worry and doubt and just – live. “Thinking” gives us some musical insight into our own inner saboteurs because we’re almost always the ones to get in our own way of things.

The song comes through very relatable, but it’s also just a well-constructed piece of music that lends itself to a good listen. “Thinking” is the first single Jean Root has released since her 2019 debut, ‘Noticed.’ Released in March of that year, the title track of that record gave way to a very soulful Swedish artist. In that time Jean Root has held onto that while lightening things up at the same time.
