Bobby Shots just released his new album, “The Mind of Bobby,” which is a variety piece that uses AI as a tool in sharing Bobby’s lyrical range with his audience.
It’s no surprise that we should be wary of AI in music. It’s infected the world of digital art, and it’s become commonplace in the sphere of writing. And here’s the thing, it’s already happening. There are already “musicians” hitting platforms under the guise of being real when they’re not, but that isn’t what Bobby Shots is. Like many, not all but many, writers are doing, Bobby had a vision and needed help bringing this vision to life. This is where AI comes into play. To his core, Bobby is a songwriter and has been writing for several genres for around 25 years. Though he’s wanted to work on his own project, he hasn’t been able to find the right fit in terms of beat makers and engineers.
What makes Bobby Shots stand out? It’s the fact that his main dedication is to making music, and he doesn’t lie about his use of AI in “The Mind of Bobby.” He’s very open about it in fact. He doesn’t use AI as a music creation device but as a tool used to help him bring his own words to life. And how did this end up panning out into a full project? It created something dynamic with surprising twists and turns.
For example, the opening track “My Proclamation” works with a hard rap sound with thrashy guitars and is a flex track with creative lyricism. Then, the very next track “All In Baby” works lusty and sensual lyricism, with a jazzy backdrop, continuing as another high-confidence track. Then “Bayou Energy” is country and works with more heartfelt emotion in its lyrics. Later on, there are some other tracks with different sounds. “I’ve Been” is more rock-oriented, “Clarity” takes on an emotional indie rock tone, and the closing track “Vellichor” works with EDM sounds. Additionally, different vocal sounds are used to add that kind of dynamic to the piece as well.
Lyrically, most of the tracks build up the voice of Bobby Shots as a voice of strength. They flex the ability to gain, that be finances, partners, or power, but done with creativity. That being said, there’s a lot of meat in the poignant in the latter portion of the album. “I’ve been,” is a tale of not knowing oneself. “I’ve been just about everything a man can be / but there’s just one thing I haven’t been yet and that is me,” this track expresses. It tells the story of places one has been, things they have experienced, and the things they have been. But it also expresses wondering what they’ll say when getting to know the self.
Then there’s “Clarity,” a track that shares the want to grow and become better than one is. Probably the most emotional set of lines in this entire album comes from this track. They go, “But I’m one store away / From finding and buying / Some rope / I think I need clarity.” The song right after is “Judge Me,” and this takes another shift from the main lyrical core of the album. Where a lot of tracks are about flexing, this track explores the want for money as “a bad habit.”
Continuing forward, “Rocket Ship” talks about needing to be saved from oneself, and “Vellichor” closes things out by confidently expressing that one will continue making music. Overall, the lyrics in this album show the ability to fit into the come-up flex archetype of songs but also explore poignant depths through words.
So, where will Bobby Shots go from here? He’s already collaborated with an artist named Stay Jacked Jeni, and before “The Mind of Bobby” he released a couple of tracks with press1two. Maybe there will be more work with others, but either way, Bobby’s writing will speak for itself.
