“83 Classic” – Sam Opoku

“If it’s shocking, baby, call me static.”

When people say something is a whole vibe, they’re probably referring to anything ever released by Sam Opoku because well, it is. That includes his latest, “83 Classic.” From the moment it starts, it is hard not to be swept away by the smoothness in which he conveys every line until the second it ends.

“83 Classic” starts very grand. It took me back to the days of Janet in the early ‘90s when pop and R&B was coming together, but artists like that made these larger than life musical instances out of everything they did. That’s what the intro to this song felt like. Sam Opoku then settled into something a little more chill with a quick monologue of sorts before really digging his heels into the sand that is every listeners’ minds because once you press play, this one makes itself at home at the base of your brain.

I could hear “83 Classic” in almost any episode of Freeform’s ‘grown-ish.’ Well, any episode that has a slow motion scene in which Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson is having an inner monologue about her heart’s latest endeavor. So yes, almost every episode, as the song has that very modern R&B, meant to be placed in a mature but youthful setting.

“83 Classic” follows the release of 2022’s pulsating “Halfway There.” To hear both and more from Sam Opoku, make sure to check him out on all major music and streaming sites today.
