Estella Kirk released “17 Hours” on March 31st. It is the seventh track on her latest album, Running on Low, and it is an emotionally-riveting piece of music, which anyone on an uncertain journey will find relatable. We had the pleasure of interviewing Estella Kirk, and here’s what she had to say:
Q: What was your inspiration for “17 hours”?
KIRK: I wrote “17 Hours” about a long-distance relationship and all the emotions about traveling to a new place, like college. “17 Hours” is a very personal song/story, and I know that everyone can relate to some part of the story, whether it’s going to a new place and feeling lost or it’s being in a long-distance relationship, I hope this song resonates with you, its definitely one of my favorites and most personal.
Q: At what point did you decide on the melody and how did you go about this?
KIRK: I came up with the 1st verse first and from there I worked with “Gabby Neeley” and we put together a melody. I’m super grateful to have worked with such awesome people who helped bring these songs to life. We were able to paint a picture and story in each song, and I am so proud and excited for you guys to hear all of them.
Q: In your own words, how would you describe the type of music you typically create?
KIRK: I would describe my music to have pop production and Christian lyrics, although some songs have pop lyrics, and talk about teen issues or just personal stories I’ve had as well.
Q: What got you interested in creating music?
KIRK: I’ve been doing music ever since I was little, but I first started out doing pop music. When I was 13 I felt God tugging on my heart to change directions, because I didn’t feel right doing music that’s not for him. Since then I have created mostly Christian music, which I believe God laid on my heart to share.
Q: Which instrument (s) do you play? And which would you like to learn and why?
KIRK: I play guitar, I have been playing for about 4 years. I would love to learn how to play the piano, it is such a beautiful instrument and would be super cool to play some of my songs on the piano.
Q: When you aren’t making music, what do you enjoy doing?
KIRK: When I’m not making music I love being around family, and going out to eat at new places one of my favorite places to go is Crumbl Cookies!
