“Waking Up” – Beth De Bacci

“Waking Up” by Beth De Bacci is what happens when an emotionally layered song meets an incredibly animated vocal delivery. Rife with wistful lyrics, this piano-driven ballad combines each building block of pop music to create one of the most effective performances you’ll have ever heard. If you’re in the market for a fresh love song, this one will doubtlessly blow you away.

A few warm piano chords invite us into the track. “Trying to fight this feeling that I can’t shake off / Trying to hide the fear that I’ll never be enough,” Beth utters each word with this soft vulnerability. A gentle harmony drapes itself over the melody to add a twinge of momentum just before the pre-chorus. An orchestral percussion hit ramps up the drama and sends us hurtling toward the hook: “Waking up next to me.” The message blossoms from expressing romantic insecurity to vivid hope for the future. It’s this familiar dichotomy we all feel in the wake of catching feelings for someone. Separating the anxiety and the confidence by section provides this lovely arc, and ultimately perfects the emotional gravity of the song.

Fast-forward to belted, frenetic bridge—we find ourselves immersed in some poignant, worried questions delivered with the utmost urgency. Beth drives home this inherent impact a good vocal performance can have. By the time it shrinks to a broken-down chorus, if you’re not tearing up, you’re doing it wrong.
