We had the pleasure of interviewing Ben Murphy, and here’s what he had to say:
Q: What does “The Edge” mean to you?
MURPHY: The Edge is about a time in my life when I was stuck in a cycle of anxiety and pushing away friends. It covers the moments of me going out on a night I didn’t really want to be at but forced myself to go anyway. I ended up taking it too far and staying out till I missed my last train and repeated this most weekends.
Q: Could you walk us through the production process for this song?
MURPHY: This song started its life in London Euston station on the broken piano under the stairs. I had a session that week with the producer Brookfield and we began laying down synth textures and immediately decided we needed live drums, guitars, and multiple vocal layers. it was such a fun process but definitely took a lot of editing and thought.
Q: What would you like your music to mean to people now and in the future?
MURPHY: I would like to have people simply enjoy it if I’m honest. The idea of someone sitting in their car on a long journey and blasting this song and getting a sense of nostalgia or excitement out of it just like I do with Holly Humberstone, Sam Fender, etc – makes me really happy.
Q: What do you like the most about being able to create music?
MURPHY: I always like seeing the outcome, when I can switch my music brain off and actually try and listen to what I’ve created. Showing it to people for the first time always helps after I’ve listened to it countless times during its creation.
Q: Is there anything else you could see yourself doing full-time if you weren’t a musician?
MURPHY: If I’m honest no Since I was 6 it’s always been music. Before that, I think I wanted to go to Mars or be some sort of soldier but I have a feeling NASA isn’t looking for songwriters at the moment.
Q: Who’s one artist you think has had a significant impact on your sound?
MURPHY: Sam Fender Is definitely a big inspiration to me in my recent years. The way he approaches storytelling is something I’ve always loved about his music and hope to find my own way of utilising
