Artist, singer, and rapper Beyond The Midwest’s debut album “The Comeback” is a genre-fusing, empowering, and catchy collection of songs. The album delves into the ups and downs of life and the success of getting through the most challenging parts of it. The “comeback” possibly refers to being hopeful for life again. Each song tackles different topics, including mental health, setbacks, reflection, and eventual triumph. Emo-rap/pop-punk is an experimental sound that fans of artists like Lil Peep or Juice WRLD will enjoy. Beyond the Midwest’s impressive take on the emo rap genre is exceptional, and for a debut album, his sound is beyond distintive.
“The Comeback” begins with “Sleepless Nights,” whose explosive opening will grab anyone’s attention. The song has a pop-punk vibe, bringing an almost nostalgic, early 2000s sound to the track, piquing the interests of that generation. Midwest’s low-toned, somewhat raspy vocals add to the palpable, inviting feel of the track. Following this is “Outside,” which emphasizes his singing, opening up with his cry-like vocals, then shifting to a moody, bittersweet melody. The addicting chorus will be stuck in any listener’s ears for days. The song discusses the feelings of not giving up no matter how hard it is, repeating the lyrics, “Let’s go far, never give up when life gets hard,” as well as emphasizing the importance of going outside.
The next, “Tamagotchi Friends,” with the title alone, is a call to 1990s kids. The song is so electrifying with the ultra-catchy melody and Midwest’s vocals, sung in a punk-like cadence. Next is “Letter To Myself,” which is a self-reflective, introspective track showcasing Midwest’s lyrical talent. “Rage of War” takes a backseat from the album’s upbeat sound for a bit, showing a more slower-paced, emotional side of Midwest. The song has hints of R&B, while the following “Maybe Someday” showcases his unique rap flow. The final song on the album, “See Me,” is a perfect conclusion, an emotional track delving into topics of mental health and heartbreak.
“The Comeback” was mixed by Leslie Brathwaite, Larry Whitt, and Beyond the Midwest, while Cee B, G-Icy DaFlex, Panther Beats, and Andrew Dean produced it. “The Comeback” will be available on December 16th, 2024, for your New Year’s Eve playlist.
