Jon Often just released his debut EP “Frankie” on July 16th, of which “Pieces” is a standout track!
“Pieces” by Jon Often is one of those indie tracks that feels like it’s meant to entrance listeners with its smooth, soft flow. The vocals have a really nice, sweet tone to them. It’s not quite a whisper, but it fits the laid-back style of the track. Though the tempo in this song is moderate, the drums do really well at taking the forefront for a well-controlled yet intricate rhythm. This track has a way of pulling the listener in, swaying back and forth in a way that builds a very distinct soundscape. Overall, “Pieces” plays well in a higher-toned space without feeling too cutting with its sound. The vocals deliver a lot of emotion, but like everything else, they seem to have absolute control and prowess behind their crafting.
In terms of lyrics, “Pieces” seems to explore the narrative of someone in a relationship who’s come out of a past relationship or connection with trauma and baggage. The chorus begins with the lines, “And they broke you down / But I picked up all the pieces.” From the start of this track, the main voice is expressing that they’re a safe space to open up. However, it also has lyrics that depict this voice as coming from a place of yearning. The object of their affection helps when the narrator when they are in an emotional space, which causes said narrator to feel weak due to their need for this other. In total, this track gets into love, want, the need for sharing in hurt, and the human condition.
Jon Often is the musical name for the solo project of Jon Alvarado, who is also the drummer for the bands Beach Bunny and Latter. Through both bands and his solo music, Alvarado has been able to amass a large collection of work he’s been a part of. As Jon Often, he has just released his first EP, “Frankie.” This EP holds 6 tracks, including “Pieces,” and it’s his chance to share his own unique sound that comes from his range of musical influences.
