“PARTY” by Migrant Motel

If you’d rather stay in on a Friday night or make excuses not to go out and choose binge-watching movies over attending a party that everyone has been hyping. Then you’ll probably bond with this song Migrant Motel just dropped ironically titled “PARTY.” We had the pleasure of interviewing David Stewart Jr. of Migrant Motel, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: I like how “PARTY” is a mix of chill and fun! How did you create this song? What came first?

MIGRANT MOTEL (STEWART JR.): The first piece of this came from Chava’s demo, he made a little track inspired by anthemic songs like “We Are Young” by FUN and we did our own spin on it! We wanted to write our own little anthemic song that celebrated not wanting to go out partying. Both Chava and I are two very laid-back guys who enjoy staying home, ordering food, and watching movies, just laying on our couches. You tend to hear tons of songs that praise and celebrate partying, we thought it would be cool to write a song that celebrates chilling and staying in. We threw in a sub-theme of a broken romance to concrete the concept but the song really stemmed from this feeling of wanting to not leave your house and not knowing how to not feel guilty about it.

Q: What is your best memory from the creative and production process?

MIGRANT MOTEL (STEWART JR.): My best memory was Chava and Evan’s (co-writer) response to my melody idea for the chorus, both of them freaking out on Zoom was hilarious.

Q: Did you always know you would become a musician? At what point did you reach this realization/conclusion?

MIGRANT MOTEL (STEWART JR.): Personally I knew I wanted to be in entertainment since I can remember. I gravitated towards music in high school after joining a few bands and meeting more musicians, I remember seeing a Beatles cover band playing at a baseball field during little league, and live music fascinating me.

Q: What is the best gig you’ve ever played? Why?

MIGRANT MOTEL (STEWART JR.): I think Chava and I are gonna have the same answer here: Closing the BMI stage at Lollapalooza Chicago in 2022 was one of the most memorable days of our lives… The crowd we gathered, the energy from the stage, and the importance of that moment was something we’ll never forget.

Q: What do you do before going on stage to get rid of nerves or performance anxiety?

MIGRANT MOTEL (STEWART JR.): I dance a little bit, shake off the jitters and give Chava a lil pep talk of something along the lines of “Let’s go do what we do bb”

Q: Do you mind sharing the performance you think has been your worst, why, and what you learned from it?

MIGRANT MOTEL (STEWART JR.): I don’t know what performance has been worse but I do know sometimes it’s really hard to enjoy and be present while performing, especially if the sound isn’t great and I’m feeling intimidated by a smaller, more intimate crowd. Getting a good, comfortable monitor mix is a night and day difference for me to really be able to enjoy the show while playing it.
