“Logic” – Mykyl

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mykyl, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: Did you have a clear direction/idea of how you wanted “Logic” to sound before you started creating it or did it come together in bits and pieces?

MYKYL: Often when I produce, I don’t have a clear direction in mind, I just mess around until I discover something I like. Logic was no exception, I was experimenting with different sounds, and then when I discovered the lead synth part, it inspired me to build the rest of the track around it.

Q: What inspired this song?

MYKYL: When my wife and I were first dating, we went on a lot of adventurous dates together, like breaking into hotel pools and climbing on the roof of our university to watch the sunset. It was moments like that that inspired the verses, then I decided to pivot and write a “win her back” type song where the narrator is somewhat on the rocks with their partner and is fighting to keep their relationship afloat. My wife and I never had a big falling out like that, but I have a couple friends who inspired that aspect of the song.

Q: Can you walk us through the creative and production process for this song?

MYKYL: When I wrote this song, my friend and co-writer Rylan Hair was actually auditioning for a reality TV show and they wanted us to compose and pitch a few different songs for them to use. We just started messing around with different synths and stumbled upon the lead synth that repeats throughout the track, and it really inspired the rest of the groove. The show ended up turning down the song, which I was honestly excited about cause it allowed me to release it independently.

Q: How long have you been making music? In what way(s) do you think your sound has evolved over time?

MYKYL: I’ve been writing songs since I was a kid, but I officially put out my first song in 2020 and have been consistently releasing music ever since. My genre casts a somewhat wide umbrella in the spectrum of pop, but I think overall my sound has shifted from more of a singer-songwriter sound in my early days to a more electronic influence as my skills as a producer have slowly improved.

Q: What impact would you like to create with your music?

MYKYL: I’m a Christian, but not a Christian artist if that makes sense. I don’t want to write songs for other Christians, I want to make music that speaks to everyone and connects with them regardless of who they are or what they believe. But as a believer, I have a set of values I was raised with, and I want those to shine through in the message of each song. Ultimately I want everyone who listens to my music to feel connected, loved, and heard. I want to instill an innate sense of hope and optimism in my lyrics, while not minimizing the hardships and challenges of life. I hope I can provide a source of respite in each successive track for all my listeners.

Q: What’s one thing you’re both really looking forward to achieving musically this year?

MYKYL: I’m looking forward to collaboration this year. I feel very blessed to be able to make music alongside so many other talented musicians and my goal for the next several months is to work with them and hopefully make some great songs together.
