Writing about one’s self in a song or a blog is one thing, but opening up to an actual human you feel a connection with can be frightening for a myriad of reasons. One being that they’ll instantly judge you and all the connection you thought you had goes right out of the window. That seems to be the basis for “Insecure” by electro-pop artist Michael Van Wagoner featuring Rylan Hair.
“Insecure” takes a feeling many have when in those first stages of something new with someone, and masterfully puts them to song. Of course, we’re never scared to share our likes and dislikes but what about the things in our foundations that make us feel less than? Like our flaws and insecurities? This heartfelt admission of self-doubt in being open and honest is an emotional rollercoaster, but one that you can’t help but want to be in the front seat of as Michael Van Wagoner and Rylan Hair give everything they’ve got in every moment of this thoughtful performance.
Michael Van Wagoner gave so much to “Insecure” that the song went from potentially being involved with a TV competition show to being released independently as it was decided it was too emotional for the small screen. Despite how “Insecure” came to meet the world, we’re just glad it did because it highlights something that’s not new, but perhaps an even bigger issue in today’s world with dating and finding love being something so many have had to put on hold or be warier of due to the ongoing commotion of our current reality.
This budding pop star dreamt of his name in lights growing up in small-town America and decided to go for it in 2020. With that, he dropped out of college, packed a bag, and found himself in Las Vegas interning for the likes of Imagine Dragons and The Killers. With failure not in his vocabulary, Michael Van Wagoner has been putting everything into making his childhood dreams a reality. He’s released more than his fair share of singles since leaving university, with “Insecure” being his first release of the new year.
