“Holly” – Sick Love

We had the pleasure of interviewing Sick Love, and here’s what they had to say:

Q: What was your inspiration for “Holly”? And what does it mean to you?

SICK LOVE:  We really wanted “Holly” to feel nostalgic and remind you of a certain time and place in life. Most of the songs we write now have come from experiences that we’ve grown from and have maturity, but Holly is the one song that feels like being 16 again with all the uncomfortable but beautiful feelings that come with growing up and finding yourself. It’s a coming-of-age story about questioning whether you love and admire your best friend, or you’re actually IN love with them. This song means so much to us because it comes from a really vulnerable and honest place that we haven’t written about before now.

Q: At what point did you feel “Okay. This is great. I’m gonna put this out there!”?

SICK LOVE: As soon as we started writing it and the chorus came together we knew it was special. But to be honest, as soon as that happened it was terrifying. The guys were so excited about the song and I just thought, oh no… Now I actually have to address these feelings that I’ve buried and really be vulnerable with myself. When we started writing again during lockdowns in 2020, it felt like there was nothing to hide behind and we were faced with some uncomfortable truths that came out in the writing process. But I think if something scares you that much, it means there’s something special there and you have to follow it.

Q: What drives you to create music

SICK LOVE: We’ve been together as a band now for 10 years, so I think we really drive and push each other to create great music and be the best we can be. We know each other well enough to say when something isn’t working, and we lift each other up to always push the boundaries with every song we write. And we just love doing it! Writing songs and playing shows together is what makes us the most fulfilled.

Q: What do you enjoy doing outside making music?

SICK LOVE: We spend so much of our time making music and rehearsing, that when we have spare time we just like to do very normal, chill things. We love catching up with friends and family, watching Formula 1, having a pint of Guinness in the pub, and taking it easy when we can.

Q: What’s your all-time favorite song? Why?

SICK LOVE: For me, my favourite song is “Hero” by Regina Spektor, who is my all-time favourite artist and my greatest inspiration as a songwriter. There’s a line in the song that says “I’m the hero of the story, don’t need to be saved”, and that line has stuck with me for many years and lifted me up when I feel less than. It reminds me that I can be strong and carry myself through anything, but that being vulnerable and honest can be a source of strength as well.

Q: What would you like to tell your supporters?

SICK LOVE: Thank you for sticking with us through everything so far and for continuing to support us on this new journey. We took a few years out to really dig deep and create music that we’re so proud of, and we’re so excited to be able to share that with everyone now. Stay tuned for everything to come!
