Maryn Charlie just released her EP “Threads” on April 17. One track that sticks out from the bunch is “Hit By Lightning.” It shines as a song that gets into the deep emotional core of the album while having a lot of replayability and great energy.
“Hit By Lightning” is a beautifully emotional indie pop track with an instrumental basis on synth atmosphere. One of the main things that stands out about this track is how it mixes said emotion with clear production. The sonics are so clean, but they don’t take away from the human undertones in the way the vocal quality shifts. It’s introspective, and its rhythm isn’t rushed but gives enough energy to keep listeners hooked. The vocals really do take the stage, as they move around from stronger tones to breathier tones throughout, while still resting powerfully in the mix. This is a track that one may be able to vibe to, or sit back and introspect to. It has some danceability, but it also shines through as a landscape of feeling.
Lyrically, this track seems to tackle the idea of one who wants to move forward with their life in confidence, but they’re also stuck in mental struggles that come from the past and make it difficult to find this newfound footing. There’s a bit of a back and forth on it. In the first verse, there’s a section that goes, “I wanna sleep for years … I don’t want you to think
that I died, only a little inside.” Then, there’s a post-chorus that goes, “I always have and always will / it isn’t such a big deal, I’m just going for the kill.” The way it moves along does well at exploring a relatable mental struggle.
“Hit By Lightning” is part of a 5 track EP called “Threads,” which is available to listen to now. Maryn Charlie used this EP to delve into the human condition and a desire to use strength to get through the uncertainty. Anyone who likes what they hear in this single is sure to find something else they like in the EP. Now is the perfect time to catch it while it’s still fresh.
