“feel the same” by foryu

While love is a beautiful thing, it can also be quite complicated. Add in the uncertainties that come with not knowing whether that love will be reciprocated or not. Foryu masterfully expresses that feeling of uncertainty and hesitancy, coupled with a desire to risk it all by just letting out that ‘I love you,’ in her latest release “feel the same.” We had the pleasure of interviewing Foryu, and here’s what she had to say:

Q:  How did “feel the same” come to you? What inspired it?

FORYU: I wrote ‘feel the same’ in the Summer of 2021 during a time when I was developing a strong love for someone and wanted to say “I love you” but felt so afraid to do so. This was my way of having to process the discomfort of being in fear of that love not being returned, however, still having the courage to take the risk. Love itself is a huge risk to our emotional well-being when we decide to entrust those emotions in the hands of someone else, it feels both terrifying and exhilarating.

Q: I see you also produced this song. What was your production process for this song and what did you enjoy the most about this process?

FORYU: It’s interesting, when I think about my process, I get a little nervous because I really get so lost in the creative flow that I basically black out, ha. Typically I will flesh out the entire idea, arrangement, etc., and get it in a solid place to build on the production side. I worked with producer, 92elm on my project where he helped emphasize the sound I have been building on over the years. My strengths are in producing and writing out the initial idea and not so much in the smaller, technical details such as mixing, mastering, etc. I care more about the emotional expression in the process and being able to have the tools to fully express myself is truly the greatest gift I could have ever given myself.
My favorite part about this process was how much fun 92elm and I had going back and forth with the arrangement and bringing the song to life. This is a really special song that was very vulnerable for me to create and work on with someone I respect very much.

Q: What is the best advice you have received since you decided to become a musician?

FORYU: You’re going to make a lot of really “bad” music before you start making “good” music. Trust the process, remember to have fun, and keep going.

Q: If you had to pick only one song, what would you say is your go-to song that can always put you in the right mood? Why?

FORYU: Definitely “The Mirror” by Sigrid. That song always reminds me of just how awesome I am as a human beyond the lens of how someone else sees me. Self-confidence is so important on this life journey.

Q:  What aspect of your musical journey are you looking forward to the most this year?

FORYU: I am most looking forward to releasing my full-length album this Spring! I am also really looking forward to finally closing a chapter that was riddled with so much pain, heartbreak, and confusion. I’m in continuous motion toward authenticity in both human and artistic forms. Ready to evolve into my next form over and over again.

Q: What advice would you give anyone who loves making music, but isn’t sure if they’ll succeed as a musician, so they’re hesitant to take that leap?

FORYU: Let the love of the craft and process be the thing that keeps you going because this path is anything but easy. Having a solid ‘why’ matters more than any notoriety or success. If you have a strong why nothing can stop you from getting up and trying again.

I also offer a counter question – Would you rather live your life having tried, or live with the what-ifs of not trying at all?
Life’s short! Express yourself because I promise you there are people who need you and your art in their lives and they just don’t know it yet 😊
