“Don’t Wanna Win” by The Two Romans

The Two Romans, a pop-rock duo consisting of brothers, Mattia and Sam, have released an upbeat song that will have listeners nodding and singing along. “Don’t Wanna Win” is a song that is so easy to get lost in. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Two Romans, and here’s what they had to say:

Q: I like how catchy and easy to enjoy this song is! How did you create this tune?

THE TWO ROMANS (MATTIA): Thank you. It was our goal to create a song that is joyful and happy and we’re pretty glad we did achieve that. We started writing it on an acoustic guitar and on top of that we started playing it together with the band. Flo, our guitarist had a few really cool ideas. The original idea was half a note higher than the song we released in the end. We pitched everything down to hear how it’d sound. The lead guitar felt so good, just with the effect coming from pitching it down, that we decided to keep it that way. So we didn’t re-record it in the right note and the right key, we just left it there and we pitched it down half a note. And the vibe it created was so cool and, so yeah, we really felt like not changing that. We recorded everything else in our studio with Ben Allen from London, we had Kolton Lee in Arizona making the mix and Danny Pellegrini the master. And yeah, that’s basically how the song was done.

Q: What effect do you want your music to have on listeners?

THE TWO ROMANS (MATTIA): So this song should definitely encourage people to think about their behavior in a fight or a discussion and ask themselves what is more important in this situation: is it to be right and to kind of win? Or is it ok to just let it be and preserve peace? Especially in relationships with friends or with a partner, very, very often it’s not such important things we’re discussing. Definitely that, but then also, especially during live gigs, to dance and have a good time and just enjoy and be happy.

Q: I like your band name, The Two Romans. What inspired this choice?

THE TWO ROMANS (MATTIA): Thank you. Ah, well, it’s pretty simple. Sam and I are the lead singers, we’re brothers, and we’re from Rome so that’s basically how we came up with the name.

Q: What do you do before a show to get rid of nerves or performance anxiety?

THE TWO ROMANS (SAM): We are usually not nervous before we go on stage. But we remind ourselves how thankful we are to have the chance to play in front of people, do music, that we have the time to do so and the money to do so. I think we are very privileged to be able to express ourselves through this art.

Q: What is the best gig you’ve ever played? Why?

THE TWO ROMANS (SAM): The best gig we ever played was Montreux Jazz Festival. We played outside and it was pouring down like crazy and a lot of people went away to take shelter from the rain. And so probably only half the people stayed. They were soaked but they couldn’t care less and they were fully committed to the show and having a good time. So that was the best experience we ever had, the hottest crowd.

Q: If you could perform at any venue in the world right now, where would you love to perform?

THE TWO ROMANS (SAM): Well, I would say I would want to play before Ed Sheeran gets on stage (laughs). Because being able to play in the best venue would not account for much if there’s no one listening. So I would wanna make sure people will be listening, so… Ed Sheeran sells out every damn show and I wanna have people in front of me, so I would like to play before Ed Sheeran.
