“Die For Someone” – Sam Tompkins

Sam Tompkins strikes again–this time with a spritely, bittersweet, copacetic pop tune called “Die For Someone.” The straight-ahead, in-the-pocket groove sets your body moving, while the somewhat melancholy lyrics tap into your emotions. It’s one of those tracks that thoroughly convinces you that the artist behind it didn’t just happen upon a great song but has the natural, divine ability to inject everything he does with style, emotionality, and musicianship (You’ll understand his range if you’ve ever heard his song “lose it all”). That being said, let’s dissect what there is to love about this track.

It all begins with a covered, distant groove, held down by a simple guitar riff, a vocal motif, and a distorted drum pattern. Shortly afterward, the verse begins: “Wiser / I Should be wiser / Instead I’m too frightened / To love again.” Sam’s smooth, acrobatic voice not only draws the listener in with his tone, but his innate rhythmic integrity as well. The pre-chorus softens the sound, allowing Sam to stretch his range upward, showcasing his signature raspy timbre.

“I gotta find somebody to lose already / No I can’t sit still because I’ll get buried,” he chimes, carving out one of the most infectious melodies you’ll ever hear. It’s repetitive enough to sing along to, yet hops from note to note in a mildly off-kilter, unique way. You won’t soon forget it. In fact, it’ll probably stay stuck in your head for a good while.

Give Sam Tompkins some love on your choice of streaming service or social media platform. He’s a truly talented artist and deserves all of the support and success he’s attained.
