“Cowboy Song” by Toria Rainey

Toria Rainey just released her latest track, “Cowboy Song,” on May 22, 2025!

“Cowboy Song” is a folk-influenced alternative pop track that reaches somber valleys and energetic peaks in a tale that breaks gender roles. This track starts with smooth string layers that seem to float around in the stereo and soft vocals that hit raw and introspective tones. Then the chorus hits, a buzzy bass reaches into the core, and some synths are implemented that pull out the plucky warmth of the guitar. The chorus provides an energetic sound with a catchy melody, but the other portions of the track pull back the pace. “Cowboy Song” finds the right tone shifts, and it flows in an entrancing way.

In terms of the lyrics, Rainey states, “I wrote Cowboy Song because I was sick of being asked to prove my queerness. It’s for people who feel like not enough, or want to feel the strange grief of being invisible, even in your own community.” The track uses the idea of wanting to be a cowboy to paint a picture of being pushed into a box. Though it shows that there’s this struggle with the outside, it also shows a sort of confidence in oneself and their identity. There’s a lot of creativity in the overall writing, and it still does well at making the main message of the track stand out.
