“Call Me Your Ex” – Kieran Ivy

It is one thing to pen a song about heartbreak, it’s another to declare to the world how over someone you are. We’ve all heard the pop takes from Demi Lovato on “Really Don’t Care” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” but Kieren Ivy is here to shake things up by taking a huge alternative swing with his latest, “Call Me Your Ex.”

The UK-based artist kicked off the song with a delicate guitar intro that made me think, perhaps this is going to be in the same lane as something we’d hear from Ed Sheeran. Then it took an unexpected, yet appreciated turn down a path laced with vocals that give off this rock meets pop vibe that could be likened to MGK when he strips away his intense hip hop layers. As far as the song goes, it’s one of the best songs someone can put on post-breakup to either showcase the feelings have left the building, or to convince oneself that it’s over and done for good. It’s a song for anyone dealing with the end of a relationship, but really feels like it’ll find a home in the hearts of 20-somethings dealing with their first real breakup due to earworms like “I’m better off drunk with my friends.”

It’s been a few years since Kieren Ivy released his debut EP, ‘Woke.’ Since then he’s dropped a handful of singles, as well as a few in the past year such as “Window” and “Worry Too Much.” His latest, “Call Me Your Ex,” is his first release of the new year, and hopefully won’t be the only one fans hear in 2022.
